Fort Dorchester High School, Course Syllabus Course Description [CONTACT] Mrs. Deering Teacher’s Website: Credit: 1 Social Studies credit The class will focus on recognizing and explaining how natural processes and human activities shape our world. In addition, you will gain an understanding of why things are located where they are, how they are related to the location of other features, and about how historical processes and present activities influence places. Furthermore, we will study and compare different cultures. Course Outline Unit 1: Five Themes of Geography Unit 7: Culture: Religion, Ethnicity, and Language Unit 8: Political Geo. Unit 2: Place and Region Unit 3: Physical Geo. Unit 9: Economics Unit 4: Population Unit 10: Urbanization Unit 5: Migration Unit11: Project Based Applications Unit 6: Cultural Concepts [SUPPLIES] An important part of high school is developing effective organizational strategies and habits. The following tools are recommended to help keep you organized: 1 inch 3 ring binder 1 pack of dividers 1 pack of multi colored highlighters Colored pencils Pens/pencils Page 1, Template 1/3 Link to World Geography State Standards: School Wide Grading Policy Missing/Make-Up Work Students have one week to make up missing assignments from date of return A 0 Placed in gradebook for ALL missing assignments Assessments Students, regardless of grade, can do corrections or retake any test within 5 days of receiving their grade.

Expectations and Policies Total Points Quiz/Homework/Classwork: 5-20 pts Test: pts Projects pts **Point values are subject to change based on individual assignments** Student progress is assessed during each grading period of the course. Methods of demonstration, modeling, teamwork in pairs and small groups, hands-on activities, projects-research, computer, presentations, tests, readings, essays, participation, and self-evaluations will be used for assessment. A= % B=80-89% C=70-79% D=60-69% F=59 and below The following formulas will be used to calculate semester and final course grades: Q1= 40% Q2=40% Final=20% 1. Come to class prepared to learn. 2. Be on time. 3. Do your best work. Be respectful to others and their property. When speaking, always use a conversational tone and appropriate language. Follow class social contract Consequences Failure to comply with the above rules will be dealt with as follows: First offense…Warning Second offense…Detention (during ILT). Third offense…Phone call/conference with parents Fourth offense…Referral to administration for disciplinary action Serious offense (disrespect, profanity, fighting, vandalism, theft, etc.) will be referred directly to an administrator for action. Cell Phone Policy: Cell phones are not permitted to be used in class for non-instructional purposes. Cell phones are not to be out on student's desks or in their laps or jacket pockets. For test security, all cell phones will be secured inside a book-bag or purse and placed at the front of the room. Students who are observed using a cell phone to answer a question on an assignment will receive a zero on that assignment. Student Tardy Policy Tardies are cumulative. Tardies do not "start over" each quarter. If you are tardy, my door is closed and locked. Report to the Tardy Station in the Command Room 407 Any student who is ten or more minutes late to class without a note from the front office, nurse's office, counseling office, or an administrator will be referred for cutting class. Notes from other teachers will not be accepted. Page 2, Template 1/2 [Other notes] Remind Honors: to 81010 “Late” Work Work is late, if it is not turned in when the bell rings for class to begin. 10% is deducted every school day an assignment is late. Test Corrections: Test can be corrected for points back. These corrections must be completed during SLT. Students have 5 days after receiving their test scores to complete corrections for ½ credit back
