6 On your notes page, create a T-chart in the space by #1.
2. Title one side: SKILLS and the other sides: TOOLS. 3. Think about the African landscapes you just looked at. 4. In your groups, discuss and write down all the SKILLS and TOOLS you think you would need to survive in this landscape. There are no wrong or silly answers!

Let’s look at these photos again. This time, think about the SKILLS and TOOLS Early Humans would have needed to survive.

10 On your notes page, create a T-chart in the space by #2.
2. Title one side: SKILLS and the other sides: TOOLS. 3. Think about the African landscapes you just looked at. 4. In your groups, discuss and write down all the SKILLS and TOOLS you think Early Humans would need to survive in this landscape. Remember, they had literally none of the tools and equipment that we have today.

11 3. We have a clearer picture of how early humans survived because of scientists and archaeologists.
4. Scientists use many clues to help them put pieces of the past together. One thing they must know is the difference between a fossil and an artifact. 5. Fossils are remains of living things (plants, animals, people), not things that were made. 6. Artifacts are remains of things that were made, not remains of living things.

12 7. The Stone Age refers to the time in history and materials used to make man-made tools. In the Stone Age, man made tools out of stone. 8. Hunters & Gatherers: The Old Stone Age people were hunters/gatherers. We know this because scientists have found fossils and artifacts, which reveal traces of their life. These people did not plant crops. They gathered wild fruits, nuts, berries, and vegetables. They also hunted for food.

13 9. Can you guess which ‘idea’ early humans came up with next?
! It changed EVERYTHING. 11. What could early humans use fire for? People began to cook their food, which helped to reduce disease. People met around the fire each night, to share stories of the day's hunt and activities, which helped to develop a spirit of community. People could use fire for safety at night to scare off predators. They could use fire and animal skins for warmth and could migrate to new places.

14 12. What other important idea or invention did early humans need in order to survive? (Hint: Think back to how you were successful in the H/G Simulation game.) 13. Early humans developed language. They need to be able to communicate with each other so they could cooperate and be more successful while hunting and gathering. 14. In your group, discuss how developing and using language helped early humans survive and adapt. Write down your ideas:
