1 Welcome to our 4th Year!

2 Why do we need this program?
Research shows that children are more successful in reading when they: Read a large number of texts every day Read text they can read fluently and comprehend Read text that is interesting and engaging Engage in conversation that helps them expand their use of language Connect with the text through their own life experiences Tell stories from their experiences Listen and respond to language and higher level vocabulary (When Readers Struggle, I.C. Fountas and G.S. Pinnell 2009)

5 New this year… Weekly Training Opportunities: Every Monday, you will receive a training video or support . Please utilize these quick tips! Tuesdays and Thursdays 11:00-11:20 Open times for volunteer support and training

6 Volunteer Expectations
Arrive on time Engage with your student Chat a few minutes but the bulk of time should be reading If you have 2 students teach them to eat/read while waiting for you! Please use quiet voices Confidentiality and reporting

7 1st and 2nd grade Books will be placed in the box for each student.
They should re read the book from the time before. ( Read every book 2x) Then they should read the New read Take 5 minutes to work on High Frequency Word lists

8 High Frequency Words… Please take 5 minutes to review words daily:
Once they have all the words mastered for a consecutive week, move onto the new list. New list… do a first check of what they know, then read the entire list to them.

9 How To Read A Book with your 1st or 2nd graders
Reread an old book first, if longer book, you can just reread a few pages… warm them up and helps with fluency! Preview the new book – Do a “picture walk” and let student talk about what is happening in the picture. Student reads story aloud. Ask comprehension questions

13 How To Read A Book with your 4th Grader
3rd and 4th graders will bring their own books IDR = Independent Reading Use the IDR Conference Sheet with them Ask prompting questions and the unit questions You do not need to ask everything every time Fill out any notes you want the other volunteer or me to know

14 Student’s Name _____________ Volunteer’s Name _____________
Date ___________________________ Book Title ______________________________________ Page Start ___________ Page Stop ________________ Briefly look over the book and get familiar with the text.  Ask a few questions (take 2-3 minutes) What is your book about so far? Why did you choose this book? Tell me about your favorite character Do you like this book?  Why or why not? Choose appropriate open ended questions based on the book Student Reads for 5 minutes or a good place to stop. Ask some clarifying questions to check for comprehension or discuss unknown words Ask questions from the Unit ______ questions. Continue to do this until you have 5 minutes left. Check in with them if they are liking this book, if they feel it appropriate for them, etc. Have them tell you when they will read next and make a plan for continuing to read their book.

Third grade will be based on individual needs. Some will bring their IDR books and you will follow the 4th grade plan using the conferencing sheet Some will have more specific goals and use individual readers and/or HFW lists.
