1 First Adventure The Hobbit (Pages 30-44)

2 Pathetic Fallacy Pathetic fallacy helps with conveyance of imagery and characters’ emotionality

3 For your consideration
What are some ways Tolkien emphasizes the dreariness of the setting? Why emphasize these aspects?

4 Microcosm Microcosm- A miniature representation of a larger idea or situation When I say that the dwarves’ “never turning around or taking any notice” of Bilbo on page 30 is a microcosm of their relationship with him, what might that mean?

5 Figurative Language What can you spot in terms of personification and metaphors on pages when Tolkien is describing the setting? Why use these? What is this helping Tolkien to establish?

6 Juxtaposition “Not until then did they notice that Gandalf was missing. So far he had come all the way with them, never saying if he was in the adventure or merely keeping them company for a while.” How about in the next two sentences on page 31? What emotion does this technique emphasize?

7 For your consideration
Is there an example of pathetic fallacy on page 31 in the description of the fire? Explain.

10 Antithesis “Not till he says what he means by lots and none at all…” (35) Antithesis is the opposition or contrast of ideas meant to highlight larger contrasts within the text Here, it shows the internal conflict Bilbo faces in terms of selfishness vs. loyalty.

11 Words Tolkien, as a philologist, is able to very effectively convey that the written and spoken word has a lot of power. How does this become apparent in the episode with Gandalf and the trolls on pages 38 to 40?

12 For your consideration
“And there they stand to this day...for trolls, as you probably know, must be underground before dawn, or they...never move again.” On page 40 of the text, how does this passage utilize perspective shift and setting to enhance the work’s verisimilitude?

13 Luck, fate, choice Key out of pocket (41)
