19
Selecting your courses: Consider Your Interests
What is your favorite subject? In what subject(s) do you well? In what subject(s) do you not do well? What are your hobbies? What career(s) are you considering?
20
English, Social Studies, & Science options:
Most 9th grade core courses are offered at two levels: Academic Honors or Pre-AP Reading level and work ethic are a key factors in deciding which level of courses a student should take in grade 9. Strongly consider teacher and counselor recommendations.
22
Social Sciences and Global Studies
What courses can my Freshman take next year at Riverside? -Pre-AP World History -Academic World History
23
Pre-AP World History (Pre History – 1500)
Who should take this course? Someone who appreciates history Is an avid reader Is willing and able to put in the work There is a LOT to learn There will be a learning curve Students will learn excellent writing and analysis skills, but it will take time and effort

Science Course Overview
February 2018
25
Riverside Science We want students to be successful!
We want to develop strong foundations in Science. Successful science is about making connections between different disciplines of science.
26
What Science Course should students take as a freshman?
Freshman Science What Science Course should students take as a freshman? Academic Earth Science OR Research Earth Science
27
Why Research Earth Science?
Research Earth Science establishes and does significant work in developing baseline science research skills that will be necessary for all research science courses. Bio Research and Chemistry research students will be expected to have the following skills: Statistical analysis of data. Ability to effectively use scientific databases to source credible scientific information. Strong technical writing.
28
Does skipping Earth Science give more opportunities?
Unfortunately, no. It actually removes opportunities. Students have the ability to take between 4 and 6 science classes throughout their high school experience. There is plenty of time for science motivated students to dive deeper in one or two science content areas throughout their high school experience, and moving ahead does not actually better support their success.
29
What happens after freshman year?
Chemistry can be difficult for sophomores WHY? Mathematical proficiency and application skills Suggested prerequisite of Alg 2 w/ Trig Difficulty of content Volume of new concepts Pacing is rigorous to adequately learn required content Abstract concepts
30
Long Term Planning What do I take all four years? How do those classes fit in to my overall plan for my future? Do the courses I take provide flexibility over the course of my high school career?
31
Advanced Courses Students who skip Earth Science Research will not be able to take AP Environmental Science, closing the door on opportunities for a class (with a 1.0 GPA bump) before they even begin their high school experience. They will also miss important skill sets necessary for Geospatial Information Systems (a 6 credit dual enrollment college credit class and 1.0 GPA bump). At Riverside, we would like students to keep their options open.
32
Advanced Courses (Cont
Advanced Courses (Cont.) Ultimately, we want students to be highly successful in the courses they take, as well as giving a strong foundation to build on in their upper level courses.
