2 What is Science Olympiad (SCIOLY)?
Science themed competitions between schools Grades K- 12 Regional, State, and National Competition Increasing interest in science by creating a technologically literate workforce and providing recognition for outstanding achievement by both students and teachers.

Info for events are located on or Mrs. Dira will have handouts available Towers Battery Buggy Bottle Rocket Junkyard Challenge

6 What Does This Mean For South Pointe Students?
Take a look at the events and fill out an application – due Sept. 17 You will need to take a test in areas of your interest for events- Sept. 28 and 29 We will comprise a team of at least 15 members that will go to competitions- Team members announced Oct. 5 ONLINE

7 Application due Friday, Sept. 17
You have listed in order up to 5 events only that are of your interest Make sure that both you and your parents have signed the form Turn into a current or past science teacher for teacher recommendation

8 Testing Sept. 28 and 29 Take place both days from 2:20-3:20. Location-TBD It will be ran like a mini competition There will be a schedule of names for events to help things run smoothly –will be posted online Be here for all of your events and be aware of your given, estimated time If you are waiting around- Sit and read quietly (you will be judged on your behavior and how you listen to instructions) More info on testing will be available online this week Quizzes Submit designs on Sept. 28 Hands-on Testing Requirements

11 Team Members announced Oct. 5 ONLINE
Only 15 Team Members are chosen There is a fee of $50 per person Registration for the team Team t-shirts Any study guides, test packets, reusable competition equipment/materials Food at competitions End of the Year Team Party Meet Tuesdays 2:20-3:20 (except the 1st Tues. of the month) Time is valuable during meetings! Our main focus is to have fun and prepare as much as we can for the competitions. Come with resources and materials for events More meetings- if needed or as we get closer to competition (Winter break and Spring break?)

12 Science Olympiad Club If not chosen for the Team, you can still come to meetings Club members serve as apprentices and/or mentors that can provide resources, advice, or ideas for Team members Can attend (not participate in) competitions Can be considered an alternative or part of next year’s Team Gives SOUTH POINTE a better opportunity to do well for the current and following year

13 Competitions LA county Regionals- end of February
Southern CA state- end of March- 2nd week in April (spring break?) Nationals- University of Wisconsin - May 20-21 Team members MUST BE AVAILABLE during these times

It’s good to study/be familiar with these parameters Testing may or may not follow the handouts exactly Look at the website- Find information/tests under Event Info Division B Events Be PATIENT, READY, and FLEXIBLE!!! Remember you will also be considered for the Team based on how you handle yourself If you are not chosen, come and learn as a Club Member Feel free to Mrs. Dira at or see her afterschool if you have questions
