Whiteboards: What safety features protect a passenger during a car crash?
7K forces and safety GCSE Force and motion Starter: on slide. This is to get them to think about what they have in their own cars that helps protect them from injury. Feedback after the video on slide 4 For this lesson you will need to get the following resources together: Enough eggs for one between 3 and a bag to go with each one (make sure to use food bags and double bag them to save you the hassle of cleaning up.) Ticker tape trolleys (at least 5 but ideally one for each group) A large board to act as a ramp and something to rest this on (don’t forget to put something on the bottom of the ramp for the trolley to crash in to) Card, sellotape, string, art straws and anything else they may like to build it with. Planning sheets printed in A3 (last slide) Notes to accompany

I suffered from a crash in the snow of 2010 and it got me thinking, how could I protect myself from getting hurt.
3
Forces and safety Lesson Objectives:
Design a safety feature to protect an egg. Construct a safety feature Make changes to your design when you build it and explain why you did this. Test your design

Ask students to look out specifically for the frontal impact test. The video should last 1:46 so is not long but perfect.
5
Feedback on any safety features that the students have not noticed.
6
Planning sheet needs handing out.
Brief students that a car company has recently had to recall it’s cars after safety concerns and have asked you to redesign a safety feature that will be as cheap as possible and save lives when the car crashes. Show students the ramp propped up on a chair on one end and a few books at the bottom to crash the trolley in to. Have a trolley set up like on slide and let it go down the ramp to see what happens. Point out to students that the speed that the trolley gets to at the bottom of the ramp is like a normal car going at 30mph.
7
Conditions Your planning sheet must be complete as this is your bid to win. You must make the seat to go on the trolley (you can do this by sellotaping it) Everything you use in your final design must be written down in your budget in part 4. Your test dummy needs to be easily removable before and after the test crash. Your egg must survive to win! Reiterate the conditions and introduce the planning sheet.
8
Use a ruler for straight lines, pencil for all drawings.
I chose this safety feature because.... I think it will work because... I did not choose other safety features that i have seen like ______ because egg Seatbelt made out of string Seat made out of rolled card cart Use a ruler for straight lines, pencil for all drawings. Diagram labelled for what you want to use. A sentence to answer each of the questions in part 2. Yr7s have 10 minutes to do this where everyone needs to complete the planning sheet to ensure that all understand what is going on. Yr11s are likely to need much less time. 10 minutes to design
9
Once you have finished planning, get it checked by your teacher and then you can begin building.
Make a note of any changes you needed to make on the back of the sheet. Cart to test on will cost £5000 Test eggs cost £1000 Sellotape costs £100 per 5cm String costs £100 per 10cm Strips of paper costs £600 Straws will cost £300 each Sheets of card £900 Cups £900 15 minutes to build
10
Card 1 £900 Egg 3 £3000 Straw 1 £100 Sellotape 3 £300 Cart 1 £5000 £9300 egg Seatbelt tighter and used art straw cart In part 3 draw your final design even if you did not make any changes (show what you have changed, if nothing changed, say so!) When you have finished your part 3, you need to write everything that you used in part 4 and calculate how much you spent. You have 10 minutes

Expenses and conditions

12
What changes did you need to make to your design? Why?
If this is with yr7 then it will probably take more than one lesson however if it is yr11 it should only take a single lesson.
13
What did you do last lesson?
If this is with yr7 then it will probably take more than one lesson however if it is yr11 it should only take a single lesson.
14
You will have no more than 15 minutes to finish off your design AND planning sheet.
If this is not done, you will not be testing your design
15
You have a budget of £15,000 Cart to test on will cost £5000
Test eggs cost £1000 (you will need 3) Sellotape costs £100 per 5cm String costs £100 per 10cm Strips of paper costs £600 Straws will cost £300 each Sheets of card £900 There is no need to have a budget necessarily, but sometimes it helps with some students.
16
Test You need to record the success and cost of each test run on your sheet. Team Members Team name Cost of design Success 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Use this sheet for each of the students so that they can record the winner, alternatively, you may have a scribe to record for the class. TEST the eggs.
17
Evaluation What went well with that activity? What did not?
What could I have done to improve?
18
Thinkof any other examples where safety features are used to stop too much force from harming us?
Boxing gloves Crash helmet Air bubbles in your trainers Bungee jumping This is specifically for yr11s and you will need to expand on this further to get a good activity out of it.
19
Crumple Zones on cars The crumple zones behave in the opposite way but similar effect. Instead of stretching, they change shape. This removes some of the force from the affecting the people in the car.
20
How do crumple zones work?
Large forces can cause injuries. To help lessen the force, crumple zones can be used. Crumple zones make the force smaller by increasing the impact time. Why is this like a boxing glove. This means the impact takes _______ to happen so the impact force is ________. reduced, crumple zone, longer Again a yr 11 slide
21
What if... What if we had no safety features on cars, would the world be different? Think by yourself for 30 seconds Pair, discuss with partner for a minute Share with the rest of the class. Higher order question that can be a very good plenary. Try to encourage them to justify their ideas.

Planning sheet crash test eggs
1, Draw the safety feature below that you have designed as a team. Label it. Leave this drawing alone once you have completed it. Name: 4. Do not write here until you have finished building. Write a list of everything used. Include the quantity and the cost. 2. Why did you choose this safety feature? What makes you think that it will work? Why did you not choose the other safety features? (Full sentences) 3. Write down any changes that you have made with your design here. Why did you change this? Draw your final design below and label it. ________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________
