1 Research regarding the reconversion and reintegration of the industrial landscape in Turnu Măgurele.
Author: Răuțoiu Andra Adina Coordinator: Sef lucr. dr. Claudia Fabian Asist. drd. Vladimir Boc International Student Symposium "Hortus Academicus“ March 31, Bucharest, Romania 1

2 Introduction Motivation Goal Objectives Area with tourism potential
Continuity by change Harmony between nature and human habitat Motivation Improved quality of life Cleaning the area Protecting the biodiversity Goal Reintegration and reconversion of the industrial landscape Establiching a tourism program on the Danube including Turnu Magurele Creating public spaces for tourists and for the community Objectives International Student Symposium "Hortus Academicus“ March 31, Bucharest, Romania

5 Results and discussions
Romania Discontinuous urban tissue Industrial spaces Turnu Măgurele Waste discharge Permanent and annual crops Discontinue irrigation Rice crop - continue irrigation Orchard Vineyards Mixed forest Danube Bulgaria Nicopole Functional analysis reveals the categories of build areas, and also of the surrounding landscape. The predominant landmass is comprised of permanent and annual crops that do no have an irrigation system. Rice fields represent a reduced percentage of the landmass and have a continuous irrigation system. Vineyards are located to the north of the city, producing a large quantity of grapes and wine. Forested areas are present to the south of the city, alongside the banks of the Danube, representing a protected area, entitled Natura 2000. International Student Symposium "Hortus Academicus“ March 31, Bucharest, Romania

6 Results and discussions
Monument to independence Central Park Water tower The bridge over the river Medieval fortress Turnu The site contains areas with protected habitats and species of animals. These areas stretch along the Danube, creating a favourable habitat for species of birds, reptiles and fish. These species can also be found in Bulgaria, where a natural sanctuary has been established thanks to the high elevation landscape acting as a barrier for harmful agents. Most tourist attractions are located inside the city, however, the most important of these is the medieval fortress of Turnu, near the Danube. International Student Symposium "Hortus Academicus“ March 31, Bucharest, Romania 6

7 Results and discussions
Romania Turnu Măgurele Wind direction in winter V-S Pollution area Industry Main circulations Bulgaria Nicopole Danube Chemical analysis of rainfall, conducted between by APM Teleorman, revealed a neutral water pH and low ionic content. This indicates that the major agents for pollution are situated at medium to far distances away. Soils with a high degree of pollution are located near the primary sources, relatively reduced by the height of the chimney outlets. From 2010 to 2012, steps were taken for the correct disposal of wastewater procedure. International Student Symposium "Hortus Academicus“ March 31, Bucharest, Romania 7

8 Conclusions - Synthesis
After the initial sets of analysis were performed, their synthesis revealed the potential of the proposed site by marking strong and weak points. The major problems facing the site are: lack of space dedicated to recreation on the Danube; ruins left from the industrial landscape; absence of a tourism harbour; untapped sightseeing such as the medieval fortress of Turnu and of course the presence of air and water pollution near the Danube. International Student Symposium "Hortus Academicus“ March 31, Bucharest, Romania

9 Conclusions - Strategy
Ecological spaces Designing the harbour Cleaning up the wate Ecological design for the preservation of biodiversity (forests, Danube river banks) Recreational parks Activities designed to bring people closer to nature Designing spaces with tourism in mind Removing wastes from the harbour and Danube Inaugurating the entrance space Clearing areas of toxic waste Refitting air quality monitoring stations Creating an ecological landfill Forest curtains Medieval fortress Turnu Refurbishing the industry Creating a natural barrier Extending by planting forests Uniting the forests along the Danube Framing the industrial area in greenery Diminishing the pollution of active industry Opening access to the public Creating an industrial themed tourist area Establishing a tourism plan for the monument Creating a main access direction Tapping the cultural value of the area International Student Symposium "Hortus Academicus“ March 31, Bucharest, Romania
