1 Challenge Problem- from a week ago
1. Identify the type of cells that receive and transmit information. 2. These cells are very useful if you go without eating for a long time. 3. Name the 2 types of cells for reproduction. 4. Describe the difference between active transport and facilitated diffusion. 5. Get a note packet from the front.

2 Tissues: Epithelial Tissue
Chapter 3b

3 Body Tissues Cells are specialized for particular functions Tissues
Groups of cells with similar structure and function Four primary types Epithelium Connective tissue Nervous tissue Muscle Slide 3.41 Copyright © 2003 Pearson Education, Inc. publishing as Benjamin Cummings

4 Epithelial Tissues Found in different areas Functions Body coverings
Body linings Glandular tissue Functions Protection Absorption Filtration Secretion Slide 3.42 Copyright © 2003 Pearson Education, Inc. publishing as Benjamin Cummings

5 Epithelium Characteristics
Cells fit closely together Tissue layer always has one free surface The lower surface is bound by a basement membrane Avascular (have no blood supply) Regenerate easily if well nourished Slide 3.43 Copyright © 2003 Pearson Education, Inc. publishing as Benjamin Cummings

6 Classification of Epithelium
Number of cell layers Simple – one layer Stratified – more than one layer Figure 3.16a Slide 3.44a Copyright © 2003 Pearson Education, Inc. publishing as Benjamin Cummings

7 Classification of Epithelium
Shape of cells Squamous – flattened Cuboidal – cube-shaped Columnar – column-like Figure 3.16b Slide 3.44b Copyright © 2003 Pearson Education, Inc. publishing as Benjamin Cummings

8 Simple Epithelium Simple squamous Single layer of flat cells
Usually forms membranes Lines body cavities Lines lungs and capillaries Figure 3.17a Slide 3.45 Copyright © 2003 Pearson Education, Inc. publishing as Benjamin Cummings

9

10 Simple Epithelium Simple cuboidal Single layer of cube-like cells
Common in glands and their ducts Forms walls of kidney tubules Covers the ovaries Figure 3.17b Slide 3.46 Copyright © 2003 Pearson Education, Inc. publishing as Benjamin Cummings

11

12 Simple Epithelium Simple columnar Single layer of tall cells
Often includes goblet cells, which produce mucus Lines digestive tract Figure 3.17c Slide 3.47 Copyright © 2003 Pearson Education, Inc. publishing as Benjamin Cummings

13

14 Simple Epithelium Pseudostratified
Single layer, but some cells are shorter than others Often looks like a double cell layer Sometimes ciliated, such as in the respiratory tract May function in absorption or secretion Figure 3.17d Slide 3.48 Copyright © 2003 Pearson Education, Inc. publishing as Benjamin Cummings

15

16 Stratified Epithelium
Stratified squamous Cells at the free edge are flattened Found as a protective covering where friction is common Locations Skin Mouth Esophagus Figure 3.17e Slide 3.49 Copyright © 2003 Pearson Education, Inc. publishing as Benjamin Cummings

17

18 Stratified Epithelium
Stratified cuboidal Two layers of cuboidal cells Stratified columnar Surface cells are columnar, cells underneath vary in size and shape Stratified cuboidal and columnar Rare in human body Found mainly in ducts of large glands Slide 3.50 Copyright © 2003 Pearson Education, Inc. publishing as Benjamin Cummings

19 Stratified Epithelium
Transitional epithelium Shape of cells depends upon the amount of stretching Lines organs of the urinary system Figure 3.17f Slide 3.51 Copyright © 2003 Pearson Education, Inc. publishing as Benjamin Cummings

20 Quick Quiz What kind of epithelial tissue lines body cavities?
Simple squamous What kind of epithelial tissue is found in the mouth, skin, and esophagus? Stratified Squamous If an epithelial tissue has many layers of squamous cells, how would we catagorize it?

21 Challenge Problem 1. First person/people to your desk get the following For each person Epithelial Tissue Note Sheet For each person Epithelial Worksheet (has big blank boxes on it) For entire group of 2-4  4 different papers with different shapes on them They are in order in the metal bin

22 Epithelial Modeling Color the different shapes different colors
Draw and color a basement membrane for each tissue types Draw a nucleus Make sure the pieces fit TIGHTLY together! Label the parts/layers of the epithelial tissue When everyone at your table is finished with each tissue type I will stamp your papers

23 Challenge problem- collecting
1. This type of tissue lines body cavities and lungs. 2. Describe the layers and shape of the following tissues. Simple columnar Stratified squamous Pseudostratified columnar 3. Identify the types of tissue we find in our airways that have cilia on them that remove junk from those airways. 4. A type of tissue that we can find in our digestive tracts that secrete mucus and also absorb nutrients is ___________ ___________.

24 Clean Up 1 scraps of paper in the trash
2 Keep the cell-shaped paper at your desk 3. I will collect your Epithelial Tissue Worksheet (the one you glued)

25 Turn in your Epithelium Worksheet
Once directed Get 1 microscope per pair Make sure it is on Low power and lights off Put a paper towel down Get 1-2 slides from me

26 Examining Epithelial Tissue- Do This Now
Get ‘Examining Epithelial Tissue’ lab from the front Read the FLT and all the instructions for the lab Once directed Get 1 microscope per pair Make sure it is on Low power and lights off Put a paper towel down Get 1-2 slides from me and set on paper towel Microscope Review Complete Observations

27 Microscope Review Always start Low Power (short lens) and lights off
When on High power ONLY USE FINE FOCUS KNOB When finished put Low Power, remove slide, organize desk

28 Challenge Problem- Get out your review sheets
1. Identify the tissues to the right and below

29 Challenge Problem Identify the tissue to the  right and below

30 Challenge Problem- get out your Epithelial Tiss Lab
Exam 2 results Period Review Completion # A’s Avg Score on Exam 3 83.3% 4 30.0 68.2% 5 92% !! 30.4 69.2% 7 73.1% 2 29.3 66.7%

31 Complete Epithelial Tissue Obs
Think about the table at which you left off Go to the next set of slides NOW. 10 min each to make last observations

32 CSA #1 Chapters 1-3 10 minutes to review
You can quiz each other with your 3x5 cards You can add stuff to it by using the book or notes, but not your neighbor’s note card If you make one, use a ruler and scissors to create a 3” by 5” card Only have 10 minutes
