1 Grade 7 Social Studies Societal Empowerment Welcome to the 20th
Century

2 The 20th century is 1900 to 1999. Canada is growing up!
But, it is still a very young country at 33 years old. (Birth = 1867) We started with looking at how European settlers interacted with and treated the First Nations Peoples who were here when they arrived in the New World. We then looked at how National policies of our Government in the late 1800s around economics and immigration empowered some and disempowered others. Now, as Canada enters the 20th century, there are some major issues that will shape the rest of Canada’s history and identity as a country.

3 From a grade seven social studies perspective, the three main issues that shape Canada in the 20th Century are: The Women’s Rights Movement The Industrial Revolution Canada’s role in World War I

SCO 5.1 evaluate the conditions of everyday life for the peoples of Canada at the turn of the 20th century

5 To Do: Use pages 212 – 217 to create a chart (use your own jot-notes) showing the daily life in the early 20th century. Using the article What Developing Country? make a list of important descriptors that show what life was like 3. What does the term disparity mean? What is social disparity? Give some examples of social disparity that existed during this period in Canada’s history.

SCO 5.2 describe the impact of the Industrial Revolution on industry and workers in the Maritimes and across Canada.

7 To Do: Textbook What does the word revolution usually mean? (p.208)
The Industrial Revolution can be summed up by looking at three big changes that affected all kinds of industry in the early parts of the 20th century. What are these three changes? Internet Research some facts, dates, and key events about the Industrial Revolution. Include some specific to Canada.
