January 11, 1935 One of Amelia Earhart’s Great Accomplishments
On January 11, 1935, Amelia Earhart became the first person to fly from Hawaii to the United States. Hawaiian government wanted to increase interest in Hawaii and establish a flight service to the United States, so they offered $10,000 to anyone who could make the fight and prove it could be done. Earhart jumped at the chance. She flew from Honolulu, Hawaii to Oakland, California solo. It took her over 18 hours to fly the 2400 miles. Instead of a passenger, she had extra fuel and a two-way radio next to her in the plane. Amelia Earhart’s accomplishment earned her a lot of credit and honor and increased the interest in women as pilots.
