The Landscape Changes Coaches are feeling the pressure. Seniors may be playing basketball for the last time. Underclassmen are expected to perform but may lack experience and maturity. Expectations of officials is heightened.

End of the Season & Post Season Important Points
March = The Last 4 Minutes of the Game Like the last 4 minutes of the game, officials have to be “perfect” at this time of the year. Why? Everything takes on a greater significance Every game becomes bigger and more important. Every possession and every play has a greater impact on the outcome. Things have a greater significance because there is no time to recover!

End of the Season & Post Season Important Points
Keys to ”Perfection” Treasure the Assignment: You have no control over the game you are assigned. You may think you deserve better, but you can certainly control your attitude and effort. Enjoy the experience. Pregame Conference: Probably more important than at any other time of year. May be working with officials from other boards you don’t know. Involve the entire crew if you are the Referee. Use the AABO Pregame Card.

Keys to ”Perfection” Don’t forget the table crew 1. The table crew is critical to our success. 2. Communicate with them…impress on them how important they are to the game. 4. Teams/Players are better…we need to keep pace Because they are better we need to be better. Be ready for everything and get surprised by nothing. Play around the rim Athleticism

End of the Season & Post Season Important Points
Keys to ”Perfection” 5. Positioning Get the crew in the best position. Lead: Get to the ball side. Adjust your position to get an open look. Don’t stand and get “straight-lined”. Who’s watching the clock? 6. Don’t change the way we have officiated all year Enforce the rules as written…no individual philosophies. Don’t let the style of play dictate the way we officiate.

Keys to ”Perfection” 7. Communicate…be approachable…diffuse issues Emotions are high. Acknowledge. Don’t throw bait or take the bait. 8. Remember where you are. Use approved high school signals/mechanics Consistency of mechanics/signals = good positioning, better crew dynamics and clear communication. You don’t need to demonstrate you officiate at the collegiate level…they don’t care.
