SUBJECT-BASED BANDING AT P5
In summary, your child will take a subject determined by the school at Primary 6, based on our professional judgement of what would be best for your child. At the end of P6, your child will sit for the PSLE. For your child’s cohort, all subjects are examinable except Foundation Science. Examinable Foundation Science will only be offered one year later as we need to review the Foundation Science syllabus to make it examinable, as it is not currently designed as an examinable subject. 12 12
13
School’s policy for leave / absence from school during school term
Parents to write in to school for leave from school during school term. Absence from school during term time is strongly discouraged.
14
PSLE Matters
15
PSLE – Placement Exam Need to reflect the relative achievement level of pupils within their peers. Places pupils into different courses according to their academic ability. Enables posting to secondary schools by merit and as far as possible into a school of their choice.
16
PSLE – Examinable Subjects
English / Foundation English Mathematics / Foundation Mathematics Science / Foundation Science Mother Tongue* / Foundation Mother Tongue* *Not applicable to pupils exempted from MT All subjects carry equal weightings
17
PSLE T-SCORE Transformed Score or T-Score
A need for standardization of the raw scores in PSLE Transformed Score or T-Score
18
Calculation of PSLE T-Score
T-score = (x – m)/SD Where x is the pupil’s mark (raw score); m is the average mark scored by all the pupils who sat for the subject; SD is the standard deviation
19
Example : Pupil A’s marks (X) in English exam = 80
Average mark (m) scored by all pupils = 68 Spread of marks (SD) around the average mark (m) = 14 T = 50 + = 58.57 10 (80 – 68)
20
Example : 85 62.14 80 58.57 90 65.71 Total 248.56 Subject
Raw Score (100%) T-Score English 85 62.14 Mathematics 80 58.57 Science Mother Tongue 90 65.71 Total 248.56
