1 To explore and understand what makes a good story.
Learning Objective… To explore and understand what makes a good story.

2 Can you name that Roald Dahl character…?
1 2 3 Characters Answer: The BFG 6 4 5

3 Come up with a recipe What ingredients make a good story?
Grate in an evil character Mix in a handful of adjectives What makes a good story? Stir in an interesting opening You have just 2 minutes to come up with a list of ingredients for a good story. Try to think up a minimum of 6 ingredients!

4 The story begins when James’s mother and father go to London to do some shopping and there a terrible thing happens. Both of them suddenly get eaten up by an enormous angry rhinoceros which had escaped from London Zoo. Poor James was then sent away to live with his two aunts, Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker and they were both really horrible people. They were selfish and lazy.

5 You are going to create another horrid Aunt
Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker They never called him by his real name, but always referred to him as ‘you disgusting little beast’ or ‘you filthy nuisance’ or ‘you miserable creature.’ Aunt Sponge was enormously fat and very short. She had small piggy eyes, a sunken mouth, and one of those white flabby faces that looked exactly as though it had been boiled. She was like a great white soggy over boiled cabbage. Aunt Spiker, on the other hand, was lean and tall and bony, and she wore steel-rimmed spectacles that fixed on to the end of her nose with a clip. She had a screeching voice and long wet narrow lips, and whenever she got angry or excited, little flecks of spit would come shooting out of her mouth as she talked. You are going to create another horrid Aunt It must include: Her name ‘Aunt……’ Illustration (A drawing) A short description of her (make her as horrid & disgusting as you can!)

6 During his adventures, James meets a variety of creatures. He meets:
The Old Grasshopper Centipede Miss Spider Silkworm Glow-worm Earthworm Ladybird The insect friends that James meets in the giant peach fill the place of his family and become his trusted companions on a terrifying journey.

7 You have 3 minutes to create a title for a new children’s book.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Fantastic Mr. Fox James and the Giant Peach The Twits The BFG The Witches Matilda The Enormous Crocodile You have 3 minutes to create a title for a new children’s book.

8 Blurb for James & the Giant Peach
James’s aunts, Spiker and Sponge, are always calling him names. They beat him and starve him and make his life a misery. If only his parents hadn’t been eaten by an angry escaped rhinoceros, he wouldn’t be in this mess. But one day he meets a mysterious man who gives him a bag of magic crocodile tongues and so begins the adventure of his dreams Now you have the title for your new story, you must write a blurb to go on the back of your book. It must give the reader a insight to the story without giving to much away!
