Mrs. Barback’s Class Newsletter
Week of: February 4, 2019 ELA: This week we will continue Module 3 of Wit and Wisdom. Module 3 explores different immigrants and the journeys they take. We will read “The Memory Coat”. Using this text, we will explore how to construct a narrative writing piece. We will break apart the components and rubric and then complete a task in which the students need to finish the story where it left off. Math: This week we will continue learning about fractions. We will continue placing various fractions on the number line and comparing fractions and whole numbers on the number line by reasoning about their distance from zero. We will also begin to decompose whole number fractions greater than 1 using whole number equivalence with various models. We will also be able to explain equivalence by manipulating units and reasoning about their size and compare fractions with the name numerator. Social Living: This week we will continue learning about environments. We will be discussing and learning about what an ecosystem is, how humans affect their environment, how we can help protect Louisiana’s species, and how we use natural resources. We will explore different habitats and the characteristics of that habitat. I can determine the central lesson and explain how it is conveyed through key details in the text. 2. I can describe how parts of a story build on one another. 3. I can explain how an illustration contributes to the story. Math: 1. I can specify and partition a whole into equal parts, identifying and counting unit fractions using concrete models. 2. I can specify and partition a whole into equal parts, identifying and counting unit fractions by folding fraction strips. 3. I can partition a whole into equal parts and define the equal parts to identify the unit fraction numerically 4. I can identify and represent shaded and non-shaded parts of one whole as fractions.
