THE OUTCOME OF THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR
The north was victorious over the defeated south.
The south was pretty much destroyed.
Sherman’s Total War:
Total War: a war tactic that may include any and all-civilian associated resources and infrastructure as military targets.
The south’s agricultural based economy was basically destroyed. (BOOM).
The passing of the Thirteenth Amendment
Freedom of African Americans.

PROBLEMS WITH THE OLD SOUTH.
An agriculture based economy (where’s the agriculture after Total War?).
Relied greatly on manual labor (slave labor).
SOLUTIONS FOR THE NEW SOUTH.
Term coined by Henry Grady.
A modernized and industrialized south.
“New South”: The South where machinery replaces manual labor (slave labor was non-existent at this point)

WHAT IS NEEDED TO CREATE INDUSTRY?
The Industry 3-legged stool:
Natural Resources
Labor
Capital Investment
WHAT DID THE SOUTH NOT HAVE?
The 3-legged stool of industry.
Natural Resources? Resources either depleted from the war or destroyed from total war.
Labor? Slaves were freed and most moved north.
Capital? The currency of the south was different from the north.

6. CASH CROPS AND STIMULATING THE ECONOMY
Why is it a problem for farmers to rely on ONE cash crop?
CASH CROP.
Cash Crop: A crop that can be bought for money.
Examples of Cash Crops would be:
Grain
Cotton

Problem:
If one type of cash crop is sold, there is no appeal to the market because there is no variety.

7. CIVIL RIGHTS ACT OF 1875, WHAT?
The Civil Rights Act of 1875.
The Civil Rights Act of 1875: Law that banned discrimination in public facilities and transportation.
Reflected off of the 13th amendment.
Thirteenth Amendment: granting the freedom of the once enslaved African Americans.
Civil Rights Act of 1875, challenged.
1883 Supreme Court Decision:
Determining who can use public accommodations is a local concern.
Where in history do we see the 1883 Supreme Court decision put in action?

This particular extra credit will focus on the Native Americans and the White settlers.
The Native Americans and the White settlers were in constant conflict regarding land.
