This joint venture will feature two renowned scholars and musicians: our guest from Spain Dr Javier Ares Yebra and our own Lecturer Dr Elena Artamonova, giving a concert for guitar and viola accompanied by a lecture by Dr Yebra on famous Russian musical figures of the 20th century, who emigrated from Russia after the Bolshevik revolution. Guitarist and researcher, Dr Javier Ares Yebra from the Universidade de Vigo (Spain) is a member of the Argentinian Academy of Arts and Communication Sciences. He devoted his doctoral thesis to the study of the famous Russian composer Igor Stravinsky and of Russian philosopher Petr Suvchinsky (Pierre Souvtchinsky), one of the founders of the Eurasian movement. In this research, he brought to light various unpublished sources, and explored such topics as music and migration, art and aesthetic ideas of the Eurasian movement. He published and gave lectures in universities of Central Asia, including Kazakh National University of Arts and L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University in Astana (Kazakhstan). Supported by the Spanish Embassy in Kazakhstan, he collaborated with Russian musicians in the premiere of Concierto Andaluz by composer Joaquín Rodrigo. He is also a holder of the Paul Sacher Foundation grant for 2019 to work in Basel (Switzerland). Violist Dr Elena Artamonova has performed at prestigious concert venues and international festivals as a soloist, chamber-musician and viola leader in the UK, Germany, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Switzerland, Russia, the USA and South Korea. With numerous research presentations at international conferences in the UK and abroad, she has published worldwide on Russian cultural history and music, and on the history of the viola and its repertoire. Elena’s recording projects with three world premier CDs on the Toccata Classics label with works by Grigori Frid (TOCC 0330), Alexander Grechaninov (TOCC 0234) and Sergei Vasilenko (TOCC 0127), the fruits of Elena’s archival investigations, have been received to a high critical acclaim describing her playing as ‘excellent with smooth and well-focused tone’ (Fanfare) and ‘highly admirable’ (American Record Guide). The concert is organised by The Vladimir Vysotsky Centre for Russian Studies jointly with the Spanish Team, School of Language and Global Studies, UCLAN. It is a free event, open to all.
