2
What is Intrinsic Coaching?
Logic that builds on the fact that people are: Unique Have an array of changing variables moment to moment observer cannot see individual themselves cannot predict
3
What does it do? Elicits best thinking and decision making so people can gain results which are important to them What is best thinking? it is intrinsic; it is what it is, does not require anything else to be a certain way to be what it is Independent of anything and everything It has it’s own value, it’s absolute… in and of itself Cannot be compared, cannot be quantifiable
4
Old Thinking vs. New Thinking
Asking information seeking questions Going in circles Complaining What have you done in the past that you’ve found successful? New Pause and think Drawing from what they learned Solution based Does not focus on what is already known
5
How Intrinsic Coaching Views Individuals
Capable, Creative, Complete Eliminates labels, judgment Put our thinking in a different place Empowers the individual Intrinsic Coaching is a conversation between two equally valuable people, peers in conversation A spring board for the discovery of answers the individuals already have that are ready to be discovered Not about focusing on problems Conversation that engages people to create what is important to them
6
Speaking to Coachees Avoid How and Why Why…? How…?
same as saying, “explain yourself, justify, defend yourself.” this causes productive thinking to slow down How…? stimulates “good idea” thinking uses up coaching time, saying what the coachee already knows Causes individuals to look into the past. How Bullet 2: How would you go about finding a car?
7
How and Why Instead of… Try this…
“Now that you’re clear about some of what you want from your relationships at work, how are you going to approach your boss?” Try this… “Now that you’re clear about some of what you want from your relationships at work, is it time to talk about what you might want to say to your boss?”
8
Speaking to Coachees What to ask:
What do you want that’s important to you? situations feelings anything big or small Trying to find out what is wanted and what is important to them You can ask this question more than once When you get the answer, stay with it and develop it further
9
Speaking to Coachees What do you want?
What do you want that is important to you? What are you wanting that’s most important to you, right now? Taking a close look at that, what do you see there that you really want? This helps to encourage the individual to really elicit their best thinking Repeatedly being asked will help them to dig deeper
10
Speaking to Coachees Silence Try not to problem solve Let it happen
Coachee is thinking Interruption can lead to lost thoughts Try not to problem solve Listen to the coachee and move forward
11
Talking About Goals Most important thing to talk about
Focus of conversation A goal is not a strategy Goals are what a person wants, not how they are going to obtain it
12
Goals I want to lose 30 pounds.
I want to go to the gym more regularly. I want to use my time more wisely. I want to run the mini marathon. These are not goals, they are strategies!
13
Strategy to Goal Keep Building Video: Conversations we don’t want
Example: Coachee: I want to lose 30 pounds. Coach: Why do you want to do that? Coachee: I will have more confidence. Coach: What would accomplishing this goal do for you in your overall life? Or, When you think about your weight, what are some of the things that come to mind? Video: Conversations we don’t want Video: Conversations we don’t want to have anymore… Where no one asks, “what do you want”
14
Things to remember… Be most interested in the goal
Embrace the unfolding instead of trying to make things happen Resist the impulse to expand on the negative, expand on what can be built upon
15
Next time you reach for the candy bowl, ask yourself, “What am I really wanting in this moment?”
