2 Who is Your Child’s Counselor?

3 Block Scheduling Students take four classes a day for one semester and earn up to 8 credits in one school year. Each class that they take will equal 1 credit.

4 Credits for Graduation
Students must earn 27 credits to graduate. If they have the opportunity to earn 4 credits a semester and there are 2 semesters in a year and they attend high school for 4 years, how many credits can they potentially earn? GPA is very important and it starts in their freshman year 6 credits = Sophomore 13 credits = Junior 19 credits to be eligible to graduate = Senior

5 Graduation Requirements
Minimum of 27 Credits Required 4 English Courses 4 Math Courses 4 Social Studies Courses 3 Science Courses Health and P.E 4 Career Cluster Courses 7 General Electives English Sequence: English I, English II, English III, English IV Math Sequence: Math I, Math II, Math III, AFM or Pre-Calculus or AP Calculus Science Sequence: Earth/Environmental, Biology, Physics or Chemistry or Physical Science (take Chemistry or Physics if you are college bound) Social Studies Sequence: World History, Civics and Economics, American History I, American History II

6 Choosing Their Required Courses
Classes they must take as a freshman: English I or Honors English I World History or Honors World History or Honors Civics Math 1 or Foundations of Math 1 or Math II/Math II Honors Earth/Environmental Science or Honors Earth or Honors Biology (only for students recommended by teacher) Health & PE

7 Math Selection Their math selections depend on what math they are currently taking in 8th grade: If they are in Math I  Math II or Honors Math II will be selected for them If they are the traditional 8th Grade Math, they will take Math I next year.

8 Honors Courses For Required Courses, some of them will consider taking Honors level classes…but should they? Consider these clues to their honors potential: Are they a strong student in that subject? They have to have achieved a B or better in an Honors Class (AIG) or have an A average in regular classes. Are they willing to do more than the minimum amount of work required? Do they look for challenges outside of class? Are they always prepared? Are they prepared to do a research paper for an Honors class? Students will given recommendations for their required courses. Elective courses should be carefully selected based on your interests.

9 Electives (Encore) Electives are just as important as their required classes. They are picking classes for both semesters so we need to know which ones they prefer. Keep in mind, there are a lot more options after freshman year, but they may have to take an introductory course before moving on. One elective has already been decided for them: Health and PE is required for graduation and is typically taken during 9th grade.

13 Attendance and Homework
VERY IMPORTANT: Teachers take attendance each period. If they miss more than 13 days in any class, they risk losing credit for that class regardless of whether or not the absence is excused. Teachers assign homework. Students need to do their homework and turn it in.
