1 THE ZONE THE FEEL GOOD ZONE Exploring positive emotions and savouring
Lesson 7+8

2 THE FEEL GOOD ZONE REVIEW Page 5 of your workbook Did you try to control your guard dog this week? If so write down how it made you feel – what changes occurred in your body and would you use the technique again if you started to feel angry, upset, nervous scared or uptight? If you didn’t try it this week you could write about a time when you might try it and how you think it might make you feel.

3 smile Smiling is contagious, You catch it like the flu, When someone smiled at me today, I started smiling too. I passed around the corner, And someone saw me grin- When I smiled I Realised, I’d passed it onto him. I thought about that smile, Then I realised it’s worth, A single smile like mine, Could travel round the earth. So, if you feel a smile begin, Don’t leave it undetected – Let’s start an epidemic quick And get the world infected.

4 Let’s see if smiling really is contagious
4I What happened in the class watching that? How did it make you feel?

5 TEST YOUR SMILE Split the class in half. One half of the class places a pen horizontally between their teeth, mimicking a smile while the other half grip the pen horizontally between their puckered lips, mimicking a frown. Now watch this clip. zI

6 WHAT HAPPENED? Now swap around so you can all try it both ways.
When you have the pen in your teeth you should find the clip funnier because the smile and the emotion has already been prompted. Smiling makes you feel good so give your smiles out freely – they will make others feel good too and remind everyone to smile.

7 RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS
The time has come when we cannot just rely on others to make the world a better place – each one of us has to do our bit. It is therefore time for people to be more and more aware about their Personal Social Responsibility (PSR). PSR is all about doing to others what you would like others do to you. It is about recognizing how your behaviour affects others, and holding yourself accountable for your actions. For example, contrast someone being well mannered and kind, with someone being rude. Kindness is contagious – and as part of Personal Socially Responsibility you might want to consider carrying out random acts of kindness on a daily basis. It is truly a win/win/win situation. The person you are being kind to benefits through your help. You feel good for having helped someone. And the world is a better place through your kindness. Never underestimate the impact of a single act of kindness. I still remember, after many years, the time someone stopped and helped me after my car had broken down. Since then, I have stopped on the road myself and helped stranded motorists a number of times. All because of that single act of kindness by a stranger. Also, it is important to carry out your acts of kindness without expecting anything back.

8 RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS IDEAS
Send someone a hand written note of thanks. Make a card at home and send it to a friend for no reason. Buy a coffee for the man on the high street selling The Big Issue magazine. Walk your friend’s dog. Give someone a compliment. Send someone a small gift anonymously. Stop and help someone in trouble. Let someone jump the queue. Hold the train door open for someone rushing to get in. Give up your seat for someone, not just an elderly person. Write notes of appreciation at least once a week. Talk to a homeless person and have a “normal” conversation. Pick up some rubbish in the road or in school which would otherwise be lying around, even though you didn’t drop it. Help an elderly neighbour carry the rubbish out. Tell all your family members how much your appreciate them. Leave a copy of an interesting book on a train / bus. Buy an inspirational book for a friend. Send a thank you note to a person who has helped you in the past. Smile a lot. Say thank you to your teacher at the end of the lesson.

9 NOW IT IS YOUR TURN Make a thank you card and send it to someone. It might be a teacher, a friend, a family member, the lollipop man/woman, the canteen ladies. It might even be for a loved one who has passed on. If you want to give the card to the person you made it for then do so – if not just keep it, it will make you feel good making it anyway.

10 HOMEWORK Think of the list of ideas for random acts of kindness and throughout this week try them out. Jot down how it made you feel and how you think it made the other person feel. How do you know how they felt? (The way the smiled at you etc).
