1 Where have we heard the word “respiration” before?
Cell respiration

2 Why do we eat?

3 Food = fuel Our body needs food to have the energy to keep running.
This is why you want to eat a good breakfast before going skiing, or why you might bring a bag of trail mix on a hike, Its why moms care so much about soccer practice snacks. The more energy you burn, the more hungry you get. Food doesn’t come packaged to you as edible energy, your body has to do some work to make it more useful.

4 Storing and Using Energy is like…
A Bank. When you eat carbohydrates, you add to your body’s energy savings account. These carbohydrates are like a deposit in the energy bank for later. When cells need energy, they withdraw it from the bank of carbohydrates and break it down. This process releases the energy they need

5 Cellular Respiration= energy withdrawal
After you eat a meal, your body converts the carbohydrates in the food into glucose, a type of sugar. The process by which they “withdraw” energy from glucose is called RESPIRATION. During respiration, cells break down simple food molecules such as glucose and release the energy they contain. Cellular Respiration= energy withdrawal

6 The respiration equation
𝐶 6 𝐻 12 𝑂 𝑂 2 → 6𝐶𝑂 𝐻 2 𝑂+𝐸𝑛𝑒𝑟𝑔𝑦 (sugar) (oxygen) (carbon dioxide) (water)

7 1. Glucose is broken down into smaller molecules.
2 parts of respiration 1. Glucose is broken down into smaller molecules. Occurs in the cytoplasm Only a small amount of energy is released here 2. The smaller molecules are broken down even more Occurs in the mitochondria Chemical reaction that requires oxygen Great deal of energy is released here

9 Materials and Products
Raw Materials: Glucose + Oxygen Products: Carbon Dioxide + Water + Energy Materials and Products

10 What if a cell lives where there is no oxygen? Do they need energy?
A process called fermentation provides energy for cells without using oxygen. The tradeoff is that the amount of energy released is much lower than respiration. Fermentation

11 Alcoholic Fermentation: Lactic Acid Fermentation
Occurs in yeast and some other single-celled organisms Alcohol is one of the products made when the organisms break down sugars. Other products are often carbon dioxide and a small amount of energy. What do we use yeast for? Alcoholic Fermentation: Takes place in your body! When you run so fast that you use up all of the oxygen, your body creates energy without oxygen. Products are Carbon Dioxide, Lactic Acid, and Energy. A biproduct is called lactic acid, which makes your muscles sore. Lactic Acid Fermentation 2 kinds of fermentation
