1 The Cell Theory & Microscopes

2 Microscopes 1590 – Janssen put 2 magnifying glasses together in a tube = COMPOUND MICRO. Van Leewenhoek – made micro with 270x magnification power

3 Microscopes COMPOUND LIGHT MICROSCOPE = lets light pass through object, enlarges object Eye piece: 10x times 40x objective = ELECTRON MICROSCOPE = magnetic field bends beams of electrons to magnify (1,000,000x) Open to p. 48 and put the microscopes in order by magnification power and write why they are beneficial

4 The Cell Theory Robert Hooke – 1665 (English Scientist)
Cork – “cell” Antoine van Leeuwenhoek (Dutch Scientist) Microscopic Animals - “wee beasties” Matthias Schleiden & Theodor Schwann – (German) Put together the cell theory Rudolf Virchow – 1858 (German Biologist) 3rd part of cell theory

5 The Cell Theory All living organisms are made up of one or more cells.
The cell is the basic unit of life. All cells come from preexisting cells.

6 Examples of Cells Amoeba Proteus Plant Stem Bacteria Red Blood Cell
Nerve Cell

7 2 Types of Cells Prokaryotic Eukaryotic
The drawings to the left represent general cell types. The yellow cell will represent bacteria (an organism of the Kingdom Monera- Prokaryotic cell) as well as a protozoan (an organism from the Kingdom Protista-eukaryotic cell). The cell to the right will represent plant, animal and some cells of the Kingdom Protista.

8 1 . Prokaryotic Do not have structures surrounded by membranes
Few internal structures One-celled organisms, Bacteria

9 Eukaryotic Contain organelles surrounded by membranes
Most living organisms Plant Animal

10 To Review Which microscope would magnify an cheek cell the most?
Compound Electron A microscope with an eyepiece that magnifies 10x and an objective lens that magnifies 50x has a total magnification of? 5 50 60 500

11 To Review Which of the following statements is not a part of the cell theory? All living organisms are made up of one or more cells. The cell is the basic unit of life. New cells can develop on their own. A cheek cell has a nucleus surrounded by a membrane. What kind of cell is it? Eukaryotic Prokaryotic

12 Levels of Organization adapted from science-class.net

13 ATOMS Smallest part of matter NON-living

14 Molecules 2 or more bonded atoms Form compounds NON-living

15 Macromolecule Very large molecules Proteins, fats, carbohydrates, nucleic acids NON-living

16 Organelles “Tiny organs” Made of macromolecules

17 Cell Made of organelles Basic unit of structure & function LIVING

18 Tissue The same kind of cell working together to perform a function Living

19 Organs Tissues that work together to perform a function Living

20 Systems Organs that work together to perform a function Living

21 Organism Entire living things (organisms) Usually made of systems May be a single cell Living

22 To Review Which of the following is a group of tissues working together to perform a function? Cells Organ System

23 To Review Which of the following is a group of cells working together to perform a function? Tissue Organ System

24 To Review Which of the following is a group of organs working together to perform a function? Cells Tissue System
