Introduce revalidation Publish and embed Good Medical Practice
GMC priorities for 2012 Introduce revalidation Publish and embed Good Medical Practice Continue reform of fitness to practise procedures Further develop the analysis of our data and publish 2nd edition of our report on the state of medical education and practice in the UK Develop a voluntary induction programme for doctors new to the UK medical register Drive forward changes in medical education, including two major reviews. Our number one priority this year is to introduce revalidation. In addition, we will complete the review of Good medical practice and publish the new edition. We will continue to reform and develop the fitness to practise procedures. On 11 June we launched the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service or MPTS. This is part of the GMC but operationally separate and accountable to Parliament. It will run all hearings of fitness to practise panels and interim orders panels. We have started to prepare the second edition of our report on the state of medical education and practice. We are developing a new induction programme for doctors new to the UK medical register. And we are making major changes in medical education and contributing to two major reviews. 3

Education Strategy Aims and objectives in the Strategy
are grouped under four headings: Setting and assuring standards, and valuing training. Promoting effective selection, transition and progression. Defining outcomes for education and training. Working with partners and promoting feedback and learning. Our current priorities in regulating education and training specifically are set out in the three-year education strategy published in 2011 – well worth looking at for an overview of our work. The strategy sets out our developmental workstreams under four headings: 1. Setting and assuring standards, and valuing training. 2. Promoting effective selection, transition and progression. 3. Defining outcomes for education and training. 4. Working with partners and promoting feedback and learning.

Any questions? So that’s a brief summary of the Implementation plan for recognising trainers. I hope you see this as a helpful step for the GMC that will support and build on the work of the deaneries and the professional bodies and that still stress the importance of training without imposing unrealistic burdens on organisations or individuals. You will find more information on the website but I’m also happy to try to answer any questions now.
