Breakout Group B: summary Aerosol-Cloud-Precipitation Science Objectives
Chemistry/aerosol distinct differences in key terms in aerosol budgets in different airmasses (pristine vs polluted) POCs offering an “ideal laboratory” for study of parts of the CLAW hypothesis linking DMS to climate testing links between cloud cover and DMS production (through UV) Aerosol particles and sources entrainment from FT vs in-situ production (salt, advection, new nucleation) importance of gas phase (SO2, DMS) and aerosol surface area measurements for determining nucleation rates in the MBL

Cloud and precipitation structure
Mesoscale cell structure and dynamics from DYCOMS Mixing accomplished on mesoscale rather than “large-eddy scale” Cloud remote sensing LWP measurements are central to linking aerosols and clouds with their radiative properties (microphysical-radiative closure, indirect effects) Data integration (how to combine measurements from multiple sensors, e.g. Twomey effect studies) profiling lidar measurements?
