What is etymology? Etymology is the study of the origin or history of words. Bascially refers to what they used to sound/look versus how they sound/look now. English is interesting language because, we borrow words or word parts from other languages all the time.

Let’s learn about our name’s etymology!
Pull out your devices and bring Google Search up. Type in the following: What does (insert name here) mean? Write down: Oldest version of your name you can find. How old is it? What does it mean? Did you know the meaning already?

Onomatopoeia Onomatopoeia are words that imitate what they describe.

Compound Words & Blends
Compound words are made by joining words. Can you think of an example? Birth + day = birthday Foot + ball = football Rail + road = railroad Moon + light = moonlight Cross + walk = crosswalk Snap + shot = snapshot Barn + yard = barnyard Blends combine two or more words. Can you think of an example? Breakfast + Lunch = ? Smoke + Fog = ? High + Technolgoy = ? Can you guess this one? Cybernetic + Organism = ? How are blends similiar and different from compound words?

Shortened Words & Acronyms
Shortened words are abbreviations. Can you think of an example? Influenza = flu Science fiction = Sci-fi Convention = con How do we shorten words when texting or typing? Do you use abbreviations when you study? Name a few. Acronyms are formed by combing the first letter of a group of words. Can you think of some acronyms you learned in History? NATO = North Atlantic Treaty Organization What about in our class? PIES - Persuade, Inform, Entertainment, Self What about when you text? BRB - be right back
