1 Comparing and Ordering Fractions

2 Comparing and Ordering Fractions
Definitions: Like Fractions – Are fractions that have the same denominator. For example, and are like fractions. Unlike Fractions – Are fractions that have different denominators. For example, and are unlike fractions. Common Denominator – Is a common multiple that is shared by two or more fractions’ denominators. Least Common Denominator – Is the least common multiple of a set of fraction’s denominators.

3 Comparing and Ordering Fractions
Comparing and Ordering Two Fractions Example 1: Compare the following fractions. Then write >, < or = to make the statement true. ___ Strategy: When comparing and ordering two fractions with different denominators, you can cross multiple the two fractions together to determine how they compare. Original statement 6 x 2 = 12 7 x 1 = 7 Cross Multiply Place a > sign between the fractions to make the statement true. >

4 Comparing and Ordering Fractions
Compare the following fractions. Then, place a <, > or an = sign to make each statement true. 1.) ___ ) ___

5 Comparing and Ordering Fractions
Comparing and Ordering More Than Two Fractions Example 2: Order the following fractions from least to greatest. Prime #s 1 LCM: 2 x 3 x 3 = 18 Strategy: When comparing and ordering more than two fractions, you need for the fractions to have common denominators. We can make this happen by finding the least common denominator of the fractions in the problem. x 2 x 2 Make each fraction have the same denominator. x 3 x 3 x 6 x 6 Order the fractions from least to greatest.

6 Comparing and Ordering Fractions
Order the following fractions from least to greatest. 1.) )
