Type 1 Naming: Writing Formulas
The cation is the name of the element off of the periodic table. The anion is the root of the element name and the ending –ide. Polyatomic endings don’t change. Ex: CaCl2 Writing Formulas Write the symbols for the elements. Find the charges of the ions. Balance charges and write the formula. Ex: Aluminum Oxide

Type 2 Naming The cation is the name of the element off the periodic table. Add a roman numeral for the charge of the cation. The anion is the root of the element name and the ending –ide. Polyatomic endings don’t change. Ex: Ag2S3 Writing Formulas Write the symbols for the elements. Find the charges of the ions. Remember: the charge for the cation is in the roman numerals. Balance charges and write the formula. Ex: Nickle (II) Bromide

Type 3 Naming The first element is written as its name on the periodic table. The number of atoms is the prefix for that element. The second element is named by: the prefix indicating the number of atoms, the root of the elements name and the ending –ide. Ex: H2O2 Writing Formulas Write the symbols for the elements off of the periodic table. The prefix tells us how many atoms are present. This is the element’s subscript. Ex: Dinitrogen Trioxide
