Ted Hughes Hughes was fascinated by the 'animism' of ancient cultures, particularly the American Indian. Animism-the belief that spirits live inside parts of nature. Hughes poem reflects the mentality and spirit of the Hawk God.

Spirit of the hawk… Choose a stanza, and then a part of it you think reflects the personality of the hawk. For example…. ‘I kill where I please because it is all mine’. What does the phrase ‘kill where I please’ suggest about the hawk’s attitude to its prey, and the way it behaves?
