Charter: document granting the right to organize settlements in an area. 1606- a group of merchants (Virginia Company of London) received a charter from the King to sail to North America

When the settlers first arrived, Jamestown was located on a narrow peninsula bordered by the James River. Today Jamestown is located on an island in the James River.
