1 Asking geographical questions
5W’s and an H Who What Where When Why How We have already used geographical questions when we started Japan – do you remember looking at some photos of life in Japan? What criteria (on board) could we use to measure development ---- don’t tell me yet but if you have any ideas during this presentation just jot them down.

2 Is this a developed country?
How can we tell if this is a photo from a more or a less developed country? What else might it be useful to know? What do you think? – Write your ideas down Source: Pupils will probably say developed because of the buildings, transport infrastructure etc… Try and put some of their criteria on white board or make a note of them as well as other things they would like to know

3 Is this a developed country?
How is this photo similar to/different from the previous one? Where is this photo from? Source: This photo was deliberately chosen because it looks very developed and modern and yes it is but it is not in a developed country. So what does this tell us about development??? How else are we going to decide how developed a country is?? Lets look at some figures before we make up our minds

4 Where in the world do you think these people live?
Akosua Molly Marie Prema Life expectancy 62 80 71 63 Chances of dying before age 5 6.7% 0.6% 3.6% 6.9% Going to primary school 68% 100% 93% 76% A safe water supply 65% 81% The answers are – Ghana, UK, Brazil, India Are all less developed countries the same?

5 What conclusions can we draw about development?
different countries are at different levels of development development can be measured in different ways and means different things to different people Lets lookj at what thsis means to ordinary people - OGP p. Many countries are changing, becoming more developed but not all changes are for the better - some changes get called development but are not for the better - they may benefit a few people but make life worse for others. Can anybody think of an example??? (e.g. use of TRFs……) Next lesson you will see how some of the changes in Japan have caused problems for some of the people

6 Are there any other questions we need to answer?
1. Where are the more and the less developed countries of the world? 2. Why are some countries very poor and others very rich? 3. How does a country become more developed? These questions will be answered in the next few lessons - although you should already have some ideas of your own!! Now the slide show needs to be repeated and I need to ask pupils to comment on the design and appearance - good and bad features of a power point presentation!!!

7 Thank you for listening
THE END! Thank you for listening So who can tell me some good points about my presentation?? Is there anything that spoils it?? How could I make it better before I use it with my next Y9 class??? OK - thank you for your advice BUT now its your turn to show me that you can do better as well!
