Social Aggression Roles
Aggressor - The person who causes harm to others. Target - The person who is hurt by the aggression. Bystander - Not an aggressor or target. Caught somewhere in between. Often scared, stuck and silent. Bystanders are involved in the aggression Upstander – The person who sees the aggression and chooses to take action to prevent further harm.
10
Be an Upstander Offer support to the target
Refuse to be an audience - don’t laugh or encourage Be a dead end for rumors / gossip Involve your friends /Make room in your social circle Talk to a helpful adult Report the bullying behavior
11
What to do if you experience bullying
Firmly tell the aggressor to stop. Try to act unimpressed Ignore the behavior Walk away Don’t believe what the bully tells you Report the bullying behavior Seek Support Remember - Bullying is about power. When you don’t react, you keep your power.
12
What Not to do if you experience Bullying:
Don’t think it's your fault. Nobody deserves to be bullied! Don’t fight back or bully a person back Don’t keep quiet and hope it will "go away." Report it! Don’t skip school or avoid after school activities because you're afraid. Don’t be afraid to tell. Standing up for yourself is NOT tattling! Don’t hurt yourself physically, socially, or academically. This is when good self care is most important!
13
What to do if you experience Cyber Bullying
Don’t respond Save the evidence Block and delete the sender Report to service provider Talk to a trusted adult Report threats or other illegal communications to the police
14
Reporting Bullying Report any bullying behavior that you experience or witness: Online: rveyID=265 Counselor Box In Person Any aggression violates CCG behavior standards, and should be reported to a teacher, counselor, or administrator.
15
Thoughts about “Snitching”
Standing up for yourself (or others) is never a bad thing. Students worry that if they speak up, they will be labeled a “Snitch.” But “snitch” is an insult made up by people who want to do the wrong thing without facing the consequences. It is just one more way for them to take power from you, and keep it for themselves.
16
Let’s be real. Guilty people call it snitching.
The rest of us just call it speaking the truth.
17
Experiencing repeated aggression can lead to:
Depression Low self-esteem Isolation Hopelessness Anger Aggression A feeling of having “nothing to lose” Poor choices / high risk behaviors
18
Resilience The ability to cope with life’s ups and downs.
Being able to move on from an event that has a negative effect on your life. Resilience
