2 An American Story Both men & women in the early 1800’s valued hard work. An English journalist described farmers of Long Island, NY in 1818, “Every man can use an axe, a saw, and a hammer. Scarcely there isn’t anyone who can’t do any job at…

3 An American Story Rough carpentering, mend a plough or repair a wagon.” Another European noted the daily activities of American women in 1823, “…They take care of everything pertaining to the domestic economy,

4 An American Story For example , making candles, boiling soap, preparing starch, canning berries, fruit & cucumbers; and spinning, sewing & milking the cows.”

5 The Growth of Industry During the colonial era workers were in short supply. Because of worker shortage American ingenuity kicked in and developed tools that made work easier and more efficient.

6 The Growth of Industry People working homes & shops made clothes, furniture, farm equipment, household items with hand tools.

7 The Growth of Industry In the mid 1700’s the way goods were made began to change. The changes first began in Britain. British inventors invented machines to help in cloth making such as spinning.

8 The Growth of Industry Some machines ran on waterpower so mills were built on rivers. People left their homes & farms to work in the mills to earn wages. The changes this system brought about the Industrial Revolution.

9 Industrial Revolution in New England
The Industrial revolution first appeared in MA, CT, RI, VT & NH around 1800. Like in Britain people were willing to leave their homes and farms to work elsewhere. Farming soil for the most part was poor in New England.

10 Industrial Revolution in New England
New England had many rushing rivers which provided the necessary waterpower. New England’s geographic location was close to other resources such as coal & iron. Ne England also had many deep water ports.

Cotton came through these ports which was shipped from the South to New England as well as finished products that were to be shipped across the nation.

Also necessary for strong industrial growth is an economic system that allows competition to flourish WITHOUT GOVERNMENT INTERFERENCE.

The economic system of the U.S. is called CAPITALISM. In capitalism people invest their capital or money with hopes of making a profit.

14 Industrial Revolution in New England
Free Enterprise is another term used to describe the American Economy. In free enterprise people are free to buy and sell products as they wish.
