Meat Inspection Act (1906) A United States Congress Act that works to prevent adulterated or misbranded meat and meat products from being sold Mandatory inspection of livestock before slaughter (cattle, sheep, goats, equines, and swine); Mandatory postmortem inspection of every carcass; Sanitary standards established for slaughterhouses and meat processing plants; and Authorized U.S. Department of Agriculture ongoing monitoring and inspection of slaughter and processing operations

Pure Food and Drug Act Also passed in 1906
Its purpose was to stop the trafficking of mislabeled food and drugs Had to list the active ingredient on the label of all drugs

Worker Protection Laws
The Supreme Court in the early 1900s fought against regulations that forced businesses to do things What policy does this support? Fair Labor Standards Act (1938) – Established minimum wage, prohibited child labor, and created the right to overtime pay for work over forty hours a week Minimum wage was .25 an hour (roughly 5 dollars)

Big Business Issues Trusts- a legal arrangement that allows one person to manage another person’s property. Trustee- The person who manages that property Allowed one person to manage all the assets in a given industry

The Trust Buster Trustbusting – Breaking up large companies that control an entire industry Ex. Oil, shipping, etc. Made those companies look bad to Americans Theodore Roosevelt – President who took it upon himself to break up trusts roosevelts/classroom/lesson-plans/

Congressional Legislation
Sherman Anti-Trust Act (1890) First act passed by Congress to prevent monopolies and trusts. Prohibits monopolistic activity and allows the government to investigate companies Clayton Anti-Trust Act (1914) Re-enforced the Sherman Anti-Trust Act and also aided labor unions in their efforts to protect workers.
