Step to divide a given number by a ratio. Step 1: Find total part of ratio A ratio a:b is said to have a total of ‘a+b’ parts in it. ∴ total part of ratio = Sum of terms of ratio Step 2: Find the value of one part by dividing the given number by total part Step 3: Find the value of each term by multiplying term with value of one part

3 Example 1: In a class of 40 students, the ratio of boys to girls is 5:3. Find the number of boys and girls? Solution: Given :- No of students in class = 40 , Ratio of boys to girls = 5 : 3 Step 1: 5 : 3 means the first quantity(boys) is 5 parts and the second quantity(girls) is 3 parts and there are totally = 8 equal parts Step 2: Find the value of 1 part 8 parts = 40 ∴1 part = Step 3: Find the value of each term 5 part = Number of boys in a class = 5 x 5 = 25 3 part = Number of girls in a class = 5 x 3 = 15 Answer: Number of boys = 25 and Number of girls = 15

4 Example 2: A rope of length 48m is divided in the ratio 4:2
Example 2: A rope of length 48m is divided in the ratio 4:2. Find the length of each part? Solution: Given:- Rope length = 48cm , Rope divided in ratio = 4 : 2 Step 1: 4 : 2 means the first quantity is 4 parts and the second quantity is 2 parts and there are totally = 6 equal parts Step 2: Find the value of 1 part 6 parts = 48 ∴1 part = Step 3: Find the value of each term 4 part = 8 x 4 = 32 2 part = 8 x 2 = 16 Answer: rope of length 48m is divided in the ratio 4:2 are 32m and 16m

5 Example 3: Vidhya has 35 chocolates and wants to divide it between Tharani and Lavanya in the ratio 4:3.Who will get more chocolates? Solution: Given :- chocolates= , chocolate divided between Tharani and Lavanya in the ratio 4:3 Step 1: 4 : 3 means the first quantity(Tharani) is 4 parts and the second quantity(Lavanya) is 3 parts and there are totally = 7 equal parts Step 2: Find the value of 1 part 7 parts = 35 ∴1 part = Step 3: Find the value of each term 4 part = Chocolate for Tharani = 5 x 4 = 20 3 part = Chocolate for Lavanya = 5 x 3 = 15 Answer: Tharani will get more chocolate
