4 Sources Primary Source: a document or other record of past events created by someone who was present during the events or the time period in which they occurred Secondary Source: a document or other record of past events created by someone who was not present during the events or the time period in which they occurred

6 Historians Point of View: a person's way of thinking about or approaching a subject, as shaped by his or her character, experience, culture, and history Bias: a personal leaning or a preference for a particular outlook Chronology: the order in which events occur, or the arrangement of events in the order in which they occur Chronicle: an account of events listed in chronological order

Historical Interpretation: the process of finding the meaning or significance of historical events Legacy: a person's impact on future generations

8 Empathy Empathy: the ability to imagine oneself in another's place in order to understand the person's feelings, desire, ideas, and actions

9 American Ideals Ideals: principle or standard of perfection that a person or group consistently tries to achieve 5 American Ideals Equality Rights Liberty Opportunity Democracy

10 Equality Equality: state of having the same privileges, rights, status, and opportunities as others Americans are supposed to receive equal protection under the law no matter their social class Social Class: group of people within a society who possess similar socioeconomic status Which groups have not received equality throughout American History?

11 Rights Rights: power or privilege granted by an agreement among people or by law Natural Rights: power or privilege held to be common to all people and granted at birth by nature, not by society Human Rights: basic powers or privileges that all people should receive at birth Civil Rights: powers or privileges that all citizens of a nation should receive Which rights have not been granted to Americans in our history?

This was a debate at the creation of the Declaration of Independence by Thomas Jefferson with the issue of slavery Today liberty is interpreted more broadly in terms of personal, economic and political liberty Who in American history has not received their full liberties?

13 Opportunity Opportunity: chance for advancement or progress
Do all Americans have the same opportunities? Which Americans have more opportunities than others?

14 Democracy Democracy: system of government in which the power to rule comes from the consent of the governed Power is not carried down by family lineage of bloodline Monarchy: system of government in which the ruler inherits the right to rule and has power for life Power is not taken by force Dictatorship: system of government in which power is seized and exercised by force Which groups of people have been able to participate in our democracy?
