CITATIONS (Using MLA Format)
Research indicates that animals exhibit intelligence when using communication. Linden states, “Washoe eventually learned more than 130 words from the language of the deaf called American Sign Language.” Additionally, when Washoe saw a swan, something she had never learned a specific sign for, she made the signs for “water” and “bird” indicating that she had not just memorized the signs but actually understood their meaning and could apply them independently (Linden). This evidence indicates that animals can exhibit intelligence beyond mere instinct.
