Sermon The Attributes of God IMMUTABLE

What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.

Connecting our lives today with the world of the Bible is possible because God is the Same. He is unchanging.

God’s Life Does Not change…

J.I. PACKER… God is immutable in His essence. His nature and being are infinite, and so, subject to no mutations. There never was a time when He was not; there never will come a time when He shall cease to be.

God has neither evolved, grown, nor improved
God has neither evolved, grown, nor improved. All that He is today, He has ever been, and ever will be. “I am the LORD, I change not” (Mal 3:6)

We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,
And wither and perish-but naught changeth Thee.

God’s character does not change.

He is constant without changing.
He is neither Ebenezer Scrooge who turns good, nor Walter White who Breaks Bad. He is constant without changing.

He is everlastingly “the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning” (James 1:17).

To say that God is immutable is to say that He never differs from Himself. The concept of a growing or developing God is not found in the Scriptures. It seems to me impossible to think of God as varying from Himself in any way A.W. Tozer

God is immutable in His attributes
God is immutable in His attributes. Whatever the attributes of God were before the universe was called into existence, they are precisely the same now, and will remain so for ever. Necessarily so; for they are the very perfections, the essential qualities of His being. - A.W. PINK

God’s truth does not change .

“All flesh is grass. The grass withers
“All flesh is grass. . . The grass withers. . . But the word of our God will stand for ever” (Is 40:6-8 RSV). “Your word, O LORD, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. . . All your commands are true. . . You established them to last forever” (Ps 119:89,151-52).

God’s ways do not change.

He continues to show His sovereign mercy as He described to Moses and as Paul indicates in Romans – “I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy.” He continues to be a Father to the fatherless and a protector of the widow. Ps 68:5

He continues to pour out His love on His people in a way that humbles them and brings glory to His Name. He still hates the sins of His people and use loving discipline to transform our hearts and wean us from compromise.

He continues to delight in the praises of His people.
He continues to jealously pursue His people by using temporal trials to purify our hearts and detach us from distorted loves.

He continues to grow our faith and perseverance by calling us to persistent prayer before He bestows some blessing. He continues to pour out His unexpected favor on His people before they even ask. He continues to do above and beyond all we ask or think.

God’s purposes do not change.

What God does in time, he planned from eternity
What God does in time, he planned from eternity. And all that he planned in eternity he carries out in time. And all that he has in his Word committed himself to do will infallibly be done. - A. W. Tozer

God’s Son does not change.
Jesus Christ is “the same yesterday and today and forever” (Heb 13:8)

This attribute is an encouragement to PRAY and REST IN God.

Because God is unchanging His Word is still true, and it gives us a great guide for prayer. It shows us how to pray according to the will, promises, and character of God.

The permanence of God’s character guarantees the fulfillment of His promises:
“For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but My kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of My peace be removed, saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee” (Isa 54:10).

God’s Immutable character brings comfort as we enter into the perplexities of each day.

Don’t presume that God will only keep his promises of mercy while ignoring his promise to judge the world in righteousness.

God continues to declare that all have sinned and have fallen short of the glory of God, and that the wages of sin is death. His attitude toward the sinner is the same as when He stretched forth His hands and cried, “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

Great is thy faithfulness, O God my father, There is no shadow of turning with thee: Thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not; As thou hast been thou forever wilt be.
