E. Louisiana Purchase Interest in the Territory
In 1796, Spain allied itself with France, leading Britain to use its powerful navy to cut off Spain from America. Spain signed a secret treaty with France to return the Louisiana Territory to France. Jefferson feared that France under Napoleon would soon seek to dominate the Mississippi River and access to the Gulf of Mexico.

In a letter to U.S. minister to France Robert Livingston, President Jefferson stated, “The day that France takes possession of New Orleans…we must marry ourselves to the British fleet and nation.” In 1803, the French asked a surprised Livingston if the United States was interested in purchasing all of Louisiana Territory. $15 million for 828,000 square miles of land.

Lewis & Clark Expedition (1804—1806)-
The expedition began in St. Louis and continued to the Pacific using the Missouri River as a main transportation system The expedition surveyed the land, created accurate maps, and brought back artifacts.

Lewis & Clark Expedition (1804—1806)-
The result of the expedition led to massive settlement into northern Louisiana and Oregon territories. The expedition also blazed the future “Oregon Trail” used later in the 1800s.
