According to Joseph, Emma was one and only wife. According to William Law, Joseph secretly teaching polygamy. According to William Marks, Joseph initially involved with practice but realized mistake and was trying to stop it at time of death.

11 Nauvoo, Illinois 1839 to 1844 William Law and others printed Nauvoo Expositor to expose what they believed to be secret teachings in Nauvoo. Nauvoo City Council, with Joseph as Mayor, ordered Expositor press shut down. Building and Press were Destroyed.
