TOXLINE® Special Advanced
TUTORIAL TOXLINE® Special Advanced Searching

TOXLINE® Special is an extensive bibliographic database for toxicology, providing information covering the biochemical, pharmacological, physiological, and toxicological effects of drugs and other chemicals. In this tutorial, we will look at how to search the product using several advanced features including Boolean searching, field-specific searching, and searching by date range.

To search the TOXLINE® Special collections, start by clicking the TOXLINE® Special Advanced button on the left side of the screen. This brings up several search boxes which allow you to conduct simple or compound searches using Boolean operators (e.g., AND, OR, AND NOT).

Enter the desired search criteria in the corresponding search box(es) (for example, phenol AND cancer AND kidney), and click the Submit button to execute the search.

The search returns a tabular list of document Titles based on the established search criteria. In this example, the list includes all documents that contain “phenol” and “cancer” and “kidney”. This display also provides additional information, including Title, Author(s), Source, Collection, as well as the number of documents and pages in the results list. You can navigate the results pages using either the paging arrows or the “Go To Page” box. Results can be printed by using the “Print” function.

You can modify your search by using the dropdown boxes to change the Boolean operators. In this example, we have changed the search to phenol AND cancer AND kidney OR liver.

Your search can be modified even further by selecting specific fields and/or a specific date range within which to search.

The search returns a tabular list of document Titles based on the new search criteria (e.g., phenol AND cancer AND kidney OR liver).

Select the Title to open the document you wish to see.

The document opens in a new screen and you can navigate it using the Menu (≡) in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. You can print the document using your browser’s “Print” function, or you can generate and print or save a PDF by clicking on the orange PDF icon next to the Menu.
