5 IEEE P802.22.3 Spectrum Characterization and Occupancy Sensing
The IEEE P Spectrum Characterization and Occupancy Sensing (SCOS) PAR was approved by the EC and the IEEE SA NESCOM in July / August 2014 The IEEE P Requirements Definition was completed during the Berlin Plenary Meeting Call for contributions has been sent out. Interest from potential new members/ companies. Functional Requirements Document Complete Proposal Selection Criteria Completed Mr. Roger Hislop (Internet Solutions, South Africa) elected to be the Chair of the IEEE Task Group. Prof. Oliver Holland (King’ s College London) was elected to be the Vice Chair of the IEEE Task Group. Dr. Nilesh Khambekar was appointed to be the Editor of the Task Group. Lots of progress was made on this project during Nov 2016 meeting. The P Revision PAR was Approved by the IEEE in March 2014 Work on the Revision Project has started The revision project will: Fold in the IEEE a-2014 and IEEE b-2015 Amendments to It makes corrections to the IEEE Standard The standard specifies operation in the bands that allow spectrum sharing where the communications devices may opportunistically operate in the spectrum of the primary service, such as 1300 MHz to 1750 MHz, 2700 MHz to 3700 MHz, and the VHF/UHF TV broadcast bands between 54 MHz to 862 MHz Apurva N. 17 Completed Projects Flagship Standard on Cognitive Wireless Regional Area Networks – Commercial Name Wi-FAR®, Uses Television Band unused channels, so called WhiteSpaces to provide long and short distance broadband connectivity – Standard on Beaconing for co-existence. Uses beaconing technology from the primary users to alert the secondary users that the channel is being used – Recommended practice for installation and deployment of IEEE Networks 802.22a-2014 – Amendment to the IEEE Standard on Management Information Base (MIB)s and Management Plane procedures 802.22b-2015 – Amendment to the IEEE Standard for Enhancement for Broadband Enhancements for the Broadband Services and Monitoring Applications

IEEE Revision: Merges the a-2014 and b-2015 amendments Adds new capabilities for spectrum sharing in other bands where spectrum sharing may be allowed New technologies such Full Duplex Simultaneous Transmit and Receive Projected Completion Date: November 2018 IEEE Spectrum Characterization and Occupancy Sensing: Creates a new standard for distributed spectrum monitoring Applications include spectrum management, spectrum de-confliction, interference monitoring and awareness, on-demand spectrum survey and reporting, coverage analysis, shadowing and fading analysis, spectrum mapping and spectrum planning
