The Conspicuous Sins & Works Of Candidates
I Timothy 5:24-25 “The sins of some people are conspicuous, going before them to judgment, but the sins of others appear later. 25 So also good works are conspicuous, and even those that are not cannot remain hidden.” Paul, in our passage here, is dealing with the third part to his teaching of Timothy concerning the appointing of new elders. First Timothy was to make sure he did not rush into it or participate in the appointment if others were going to rush into it. I Ti 5:22 Second Timothy was to make sure he took care of himself physically so that he would be able to participate in the appointing of new elders. I Ti 5:23 Third Timothy is to understand that those brought before him for appointment are to be slowly and thoroughly vetted for qualification. I Ti 5:24-25

What was Timothy to do? The Conspicuous Sins & Works Of Candidates
Some people’s sins are conspicuous. Timothy was to disqualify these men as potential elders because their sins were clearly seen and they were, therefore, not above reproach. I Timothy 3:2

The Conspicuous Sins & Works Of Candidates The Conspicuous Sins Of Candidates Some people’s sins are conspicuous Some people’s sins are not conspicuous Men have an uncanny ability to hide their sins from others. Example: Deacon being groomed but found out he was having an affair. However all sin eventually will come out. He 4:13

What was Timothy to do? The Conspicuous Sins & Works Of Candidates
Timothy was to not hastily appoint men but make sure they were thoroughly vetted for the qualifications, not having hidden sins. This takes much time and patience. Preachers have a great responsibility to make sure no unqualified man is appointed as an elder.

What was Timothy to do? The Conspicuous Sins & Works Of Candidates
Timothy was not to hastily appoint these men even though their works were know for being good. Timothy had to makes sure these men were qualified in every area not just the “good works” area. Good works generally indicate good character. Ep 2:10

Ephesians 2:10 “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” This doesn’t mean that Timothy was to rush the appointing of these men however.

What was Timothy to do? The Conspicuous Sins & Works Of Candidates
Timothy was to make sure he was not hasty in dismissing someone presented as an elder even though these men’s works were not clearly evident without putting in the proper work in getting to know that person’s works. Timothy was to put the work in to see why someone would select one for elder whose works are not clearly evident. Good works that are hidden generally indicate a humble person. Mt 6:1-4

Matthew 6:1-4 “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. 2 “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” Timothy had a great responsibility to make sure the right person, the qualified person, was appointed. Woe to the preacher who takes this responsibility lightly.

The Conspicuous Sins & Works Of Candidates
Lessons From I Timothy The Conspicuous Sins & Works Of Candidates Brethren, as we have seen in the last three lessons it is vital that when it comes time to appoint elders we make sure we put forth the proper time needed to get it right. That we do so without prejudging or partiality. Question: Are you willing to put forth the effort to help this congregation move toward having shepherds as God intended? If so continue to help those men we have that are working towards becoming qualified. If not why not?
