Several Transformations
Chapter 2 Section 2.2

Objective Students will solve equations using more than one transformation

concept We use inverse operations to solve problems. Addition and subtraction are inverse operations. Multiplication and division are inverse operations. One operation “undoes” the other operation

concept For all real numbers, a and b,
(a + b) – b = a and (a – b) + b = a For all real numbers a & all nonzero numbers b, (ab) ÷ b = a and (a ÷ b) * b = a

concept Steps to solving several transformation problems
1. Distributive Property 2. Combine Like Terms 3. Opposite of Adding or Subtracting 4. Opposite of Multiplying or Dividing

Example 5x – 9 = 71

example 1/2x + 3 = 9

example x – 5 = 2 9

example 32 = 7x + 9x

example 4(x + 8) – 7 = 15

questions

Assignment Worksheet
