1 Computer games rely on game rules being written
Expressions A2.2 Core Starter Computer games rely on game rules being written as mathematical statements. A game is to be played with two normal six-sided dice. f represents the number on the first dice s represents the number on the second dice A winning rule might be ‘the scores on the dice sum to 4’. This can be written algebraically as f + s = 4. What are all the possible scores for the rule f + s = 4? Write the winning rule ‘you score a double’ as an algebraic statement. Make up some algebraic winning rules for yourself. Play a couple of games. Preamble An activity which gives pupils a reason for using algebra. It would be useful if pupils have the opportunity to play some of the dice games whose winning rules they have made up. Possible content Making and using algebraic expressions. Resources Dice. Solutions/Notes The possible scores for f + s = 4 are: First dice (f) Second dice (s) The rule ‘you score a double’ is written as f = s.
