Earthquakes/Tsunami An 9.0 earthquake rocked Japan
Because strong aftershocks are likely for weeks, the United States State Department issued a travel alert on March 11, 2011. Now, a Travel Warning is in effect! This is for the Nuclear Crisis. Around the world Tokyo Disneyland closed with 69,000 guests inside the park. The coastal areas of Easter Island were evacuated. However, in California, despite lifeguards’ warnings, it was a great surfing day.

FLOODS Heavy rain stranded hundreds of tourists in January and unleashed mudslides. This cut off roads and blocked a rail line between Peru’s ancient Incan ruins of Machu Picchu and the nearby city of Cusco. The governor said, “We expect that starting April 1, we will start to receive the millions of tourists who always have come.”

Cyclones A category 5 strength cyclone, Cyclone Yasi, struck Queensland, Australia. It was noted as one of the most powerful storms in Australia’s history! 86 % of businesses say they were impacted either directly or indirectly by the floods. Because tourists are under the impression that the entire state was underwater. A $10 million marketing campaign will help the Queensland tourism industry recover from their summer’s floods and Cyclone Yasi.

Snow Storms Since Christmas, there have been four major winter storms, one right after the next. 200 airports canceled about 86,000 flights In addition, with the Super Bowl nearing and the travelers driving into Texas, a rare winter storm with sleet and snow created chaos on icy roads. Because major roads closed and snow piled up everywhere, travelers could not reach their destination.

Volcanoes Eyjafjallajokull (EYE-ah-fiat-la-jo-kutl) in Iceland drew-in about 1,000 North Americans. The tourism dissipated when the volcano’s lava picked up. While Mount St. Helens is quiet, tourists gather for events and exhibits. At Nicaragua, motorists come to see sulfur spew. And in Hawaii, Kilauea has the most recent eruptions. The Kilauea volcano eruption discharges lava up to 65 feet!
