ANTIBIOTICS AND SUPERBUGS
2
Antibiotics can treat bacterial infections
Antibiotics are substances that can either kill bacteria or prevent them from growing. Only work against bacteria, not viruses or other microbes. Example: Penicillin is a common antibiotic
3
Penicillin By accident in 1928, a British scientist named Alexander Fleming returned to his laboratory from holiday to find several petri dishes with Staphylococcus aureus bacteria still on his bench. One dish also had a large patch of mould growing on it. No bacteria were growing around the mould. Derivatives: erythromycin, amoxicillin and tetracycline
4
Superbugs Super bugs are bacteria that have become resistant to several types of antibiotics. . Eg Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Some disease such as tuberculosis, pneumonia and meningitis are now more difficult to treat as a result of antibiotic-resistant bacteria
5
What causes antibiotic resistance?
6
Other ways to protect ourselves from infection
Sleep, exercise, Proper nutrition Wash hands Avoid risky behaviour
