1 The Great Communicator
RONALD REAGAN The Great Communicator

3 Reagan For President President Reagan was able to capitalize on the Re-emergence of religion in Politics like no president before him. I assert that Reagan was the last true Christian conservative president that the United States of America will ever have.

4

5 The Movement 1960’s Since the 1960s, however, mainline groups have shrunk as a percentage of the American population as increasing numbers of American Protestants have come to affiliate instead with fundamentalist, evangelical, or charismatic churches (Mark A. Noll, A History of Christianity in the United States and Canada (1992) p. 465) lost 6 million. (Ellen W. Linder, ed. Yearbook of American & Canadian Churches: 2009 (2009)

6 Religious actors began to become more involved in politics in the 1970s and found their voice in the political process. This was especially true for the evangelicals. We see ultra famous pastors becoming everyday names in society such as Billy Graham.

7 Moral Majority Who was the Moral majority?
“I Love America” rallies across the country to raise awareness of social issues New Christian Right, Focus on the Family, even Jesus People The end of the Moral majority came with the end of Reagan in office.

8 Society and Religion The shift was evident in the culture of the 1980s that not only religion was back, God was back. Church growth grew and people were more open to express their beliefs than the 1960s. And 1970s . Out with Secularism….it was proved to be a failed economic and social experiment.

9 Reagan and his upbringing
Born on February 6, 1911, in the small town of Tampico, Illinois Dixon was a settlement of approximately 10,000 people with a strong sense of community and amity for each other the Reagan family was a poor family, barely able to make ends meet much of the time Ronald Reagan entered Disciples of Christ Eureka College in 1928 in Eureka, Illinois. He majored in economics and sociology and graduated from Eureka College in 1932.

11 Reagan and Religion He was always religious and made that clear in his life. It was not some he did, it was who he believed he was. How did a Presbyterian capture the Evangelical base?

12 The Election 1980, he beat Jimmy Carter- How could this be? Wasn’t Jimmy Carter a Born Again Christian? "A recession is when your neighbor loses his job. A depression is when you lose yours. And recovery is when Jimmy Carter loses his." - Reagan

13 REAGAN AND BUSINESS When Reagan came into office, the USA was just getting over the 1970s. The 70s proved hard for many families and individuals and people were looking to bounce back to better days. Or should I say, “Go back in time’ Reagan gave that option a voice. His age was a factor in the election. I.e.: Wise, well-versed, experience.

14 "Reaganomics" and the economy
Reagan implemented policies based on supply-side economics, advocating a laissez-faire philosophy and free-market fiscal policy seeking to stimulate the economy with large, across-the-board tax cuts GDP went UP. Inflation went down Unemployment went down Taxes went down

15 Year of the Bible In the United States, 1983 was designated as the national Year of the Bible by President Ronald Reagan by Proclamation 5018, made on February 3, 1983 at the annual National Prayer Breakfast.

16 Cold War.

17 Cold War. The Cold War gave Reagan yet another chance to insert religion into Society. The President defends America's Judeo-Christian traditions against the Soviet Union's totalitarian leadership and lack of religious faith, expressing his belief that these differences are at the heart of the fight between the two nations. Evil empire…How is this Religious?

18 Religion and policy Religion was at the Heart of many of his policies. His closest circle was able to mask many of the things he did as pure conservative politics, however he was always looking for a way to relate things to the bible and God. “Last year, I sent the Congress a constitutional amendment to restore prayer to public schools. Already this session, there's growing bipartisan support for the amendment, and I am calling on the Congress to act speedily to pass it and to let our children pray.”

19 What he Actually believed.
“There's a great spiritual awakening in America, a renewal of the traditional values that have been the bedrock of America's goodness and greatness.”

20 Reagan vs. Government

21 Reagan Vs. Government

22 Religious Conservatism Today
President Reagan has sent the standard for a Religious conservative. When working for a State senator in San Diego last year, the office was filled with Reagan pictures and a sense of yearning for yesteryear. Conserative religious groups continue to find their power and influence on society today. How?

23 Significance It comes down to this, this was the Man for the Job in a time that America was re-discovering their religious identity. You Reagan be elected today? President Reagan is and will mostly likely continue be elevated to a place of fathers of Morality, Faith, and Leadership in the eyes of Conservative Evangelicals
