The people who are now called Japanese probably arrived around 2000 years ago
Japan's location was important to its development
Close enough to the mainland to learn from China and Korea
Far enough from China to be conquered

4. Early Japan Early Japanese society was divided into clans called Uji
Each was descended from a god, and had a ruler, either male or female
Around 500, the Yamato clan came to dominate Honshu, the largest Japanese island
Set up Japan's 1st and only dynasty (traditionally founded in 660 BC)
Although the emperors were divine, they began to be manipulated, most notably by the Fujiwara family

Women in Japan were treated much different in Japan than in Europe

7. Feudalism Emerges
Centralized Authority declined and the emperor lost most real power
Military leaders, Shoguns, fought with one another and established a system of feudalism much like that we saw in Europe
