Adaptations of Nocturnal Animals

Some animals have special eyes.
A tarsier can see in the dark with his special eyes. His pupils can open wide to see at night.

Some animals make light.
Fireflies can glow in the night so they can find a mate.

Some animals have good hearing.
The barn owl can hear well because his feathers can move to pick more sounds.

Some animals use echolocation.
The bat uses echolocation to find their prey. They make a sound and it bounces back so they can find their prey.

Some animals can taste the water.
The catfish has the barbels to actually feel the prey and to also feel what’s coming in the water. The catfish can taste the water and the prey in the water.

Some animals can feel with whiskers.
The cat has whiskers that can feel their way through the darkness.

Some animals can see heat.
The rattlesnake has a pit for seeing heat. This is called infared.

Some animals can smell with antennae.
The moth has antennae so he can smell female moths far away.

Some animals need a flashlight!
People need flashlights to see in the dark because we don’t have a special adaptation for seeing in the dark.
