Outcomes at Mary Hare School Peter Gale, Principal and CEO

Acknowledgement of all of your work in this area. Much will be familiar. But we are still extremely proud of the outcomes of our young people.

A gradual and managed programme of change of intake
A gradual and managed programme of change of intake. We have diversified and innovated but retained our culture.

Our language Enrichment Plus group
Our language Enrichment Plus group. Typically implants, often premature, lots of overlying challenges. We have responded with: A modified KS3, 4 and 5 curriculum. Close attention to tracking progress with intervention Ensuring our staff have the necessary skills and training

The days of us matching and surpassing the GCSE results of local schools have passed, at least for now. Luckily we are big enough to expand while still giving the ‘traditional’ Mary Hare pupil the experience they need. Almost a school within a school (though invisible socially).

Even without those pupils, the current accountability measures and changes to syllabus and assessment are not helpful to us. We have a pupil centred curriculum. Progress 8 gives particular challenges (not all doing Literature, allowing pupils to take, say, Art and Textiles and so on). With all that considered, we are pleased to have a value of 0.0 or marginally above

There is no, and never has been, a meaningful comparison with the achievement of deaf children in the mainstream. Nobody has ever established a genuinely comparable group. However, for children for whom Progress 8 is a fair and appropriate measure, our students are getting between 1 and 2 grades above expected outcomes, per subject.

We also have a great story to tell on other measures, language acquisition and reading, for example. Some encouraging signs that DFE understand and want to look at this – both the data on the attainment of deaf children and also measures which are more appropriate for our cohort.

So much more I could say, but we are proud of the achievements of our young people. We believe that they stand up under scrutiny. If anybody wants to follow up, please do. Or come for a visit.
